Is Detox just a buzz word?

It is a fad? Does it work? The long and short of it is yes. Often it is just a buzz word, fad or marketing ploy. Yes, it can work. You just have to sift through the B S. which can be the biggest challenge. Marketing plays on our emotions attached to any situation, including here, our desire to be well, healthy and “on point” or cool and on trend.The last several years you can’t read any magazine, media feed or news of any sort without hearing how to be well, or about the latest key ingredients to avoid or to use , or some fad diet or detox juice plan etc.The truth is that detox is best as a lifestyle. Sorry to burst the bubble but, no matter how you slice it, there really isn’t a quick fix!I’ve been a bit of a “health nut” almost my entire life. At the age of nineteen and twenty, i had a personal trainer and nutritionist. I grew up dancing and have remained active and fit my entire life. I’ve always been naturally drawn to reach for things that are on the healthier side to put in my body.Here are some ways of “being” or mindset that I subscribe to around this stuff which I hope will help you.On a daily basis or as a part of my general ”rules of life” , I subscribe to the 80/20 rule.Meaning…if you are good 80% of the time, the other 20% won’t matter (for the most part of course.)Whatever you are doing, enjoy it!When you are eating something more decadent or sugary-like, such as a dessert of some sorts, or even if you are having that second cup of coffee or glass of wine, there is something about enjoying every morsel of it and how your body will receive it.If you are eating something and cursing yourself for eating thing thing you “shouldn’t” be having, the cells of your body will not be cooperating optimally to break down /absorb any nutrition from it! Versus when you are in “alignment” with yourself and what you are eating, all your cells are cooperating to assist your body in optimal absorption and processing of the food so you will get the most out of it!Can you accelerate the detox process?What WILL work to detoxify the body?Yes, we can accelerate the detox process by making it easier for your body to process what you are putting in!Here’s how…1. Getting enough water in to actually be able to flush out waste is essential! I know you’ve heard this over and over but are you really doing it? Most people are chronically dehydrated! You need a goal and system to make it happen, so here’s the formula:Take your body weight and divide it by 2. This is the number of ounces you personally need per day. Keep in mind this is your baseline, like what your body needs to function rate. For every cup of caffeine or alcohol, counter balance with cup for cup of water. Knowing your baseline and factoring in how much caffeine/alcohol you typically drink will make all the difference in the world for you to actually making it happen.2. Eat your food closets to its natural state. When it comes to food, convenience is the enemy! If it’s in a box/package, it’s not going to be the healthiest, most fresh /nutrient dense choice.3. Eating lighter. Some doctors /nutritionist recommend eating vegetarian or doing a juice fast one day a week to give your organs a rest and recoup period so they can purge a bit and function optimally to actually break down your food properly.4. Don’t drink water with your meals! Water washes away your natural enzymes interfering with the digestive process. Wait 30 minutes after or drink 30 minutes in advance of meals, just not at the time you are eating.5. Use enzymes to digest your food. This is especially helpful when you know you have a hard time eating /digesting certain foods, and or are eating larger/denser meals or drinking alcohol and could use the extra assistance.Can you accelerate the detox process via salon treatment? Why choosing the right Makeup is so important

People underestimate the importance of using “clean” and healthy makeup. When I use the term “clean” while referring to a product, I mean it to be both free of ingredients that are clogging our pores as well as unsafe or harmful ingredients that are potentially carcinogenic as well as ones that are weakening and breaking down our skin’s immunity and integrity regularly and slowly.As we break down the integrity this means our skin won’t ward off bad bacteria so efficiently and can be more subject to irritation (rashes/redness/discoloration/acne – you name it), weakening our over all immunity, function and performance of your skin.Our skin’s function is basically to protect our internal parts and continue to reproduce and grow healthy cells.When we compromise the immunity of this barrier function, we are compromising the skin’s function essential meaning our skin won’t be thriving in creating healthy cell mode but, instead is sluggish (weaker) state which ultimately results in visibly “aging” skin.Another thing, clients don’t often understand, is that spending more money on makeup doesn’t guarantee non-clogging, non-toxic or formulations – free of some of the most irritating factors such as artificial fragrance and dyes that degrade our skin’s integrity and immunity, causing long term effects and comprising our aging process.I know we grow to love and count on particular coverage and effects from makeup and I often hear clients say “I only wear it once a week or maybe a couple of times a month” in defense of the clogging product.  The thing is, if the  makeup you are using clogs  your skin, it doesn’t matter if you wear it once a week or once a month, it WILL clog or cause breaks outs as a result from as little as one use.Since there is never really a good time to break out I recommend starting fresh with clean ingredients once you know better!   In addition the crap (in my professional terms)  that is found in makeup is astounding.  Did you know that tar has been found in mascara?  The dyes and toxicities found in lipsticks are frightful. Replenish & Detox now to Rise and Shine Come Spring!

Your life does not get better by chance. it gets better by change.I can’t believe it is almost the end of January already! I swear time is moving faster. I personally am working on starting off 2017 with new healthy habits and systems for my personal life. These habits will allow me to level up, accomplish my dreams and goals, and to feel and look great doing it. Even though we are growing up, we don’t have to look like it. Truly.  Thank god for good skincare, wellness products, and tools. We are blessed to have the understanding that today we can take care of our bodies and how they function to best assist ourselves in optimal well-being and ageless beauty.We have been having such a cold, wet winter here in San Francisco which has been really fertile ground to go inside (literally and figuratively) to replenish and detox. I have been in hibernation mode really milking this time…going to bed early and rising early…drinking chicken broth as tea and eating root vegetables… really taking care of myself.Speaking of taking care of myself, a couple of weeks ago, I woke up and decided to get off wine for 3 weeks.  It was a sort of impulse but I knew that was the right thing to do now which made it easier.   Likely it was also easier because of all the other ways, and healthy habits I have been consistent in as part of this replenish & detox way of life this season.  What I didn’t realize is how dependent my body has become on sugar. I take great pride in eating well and not eating much sugar.  I don’t add sugar to coffee or indulge much in sweets but I had got into the habit of having a glass (or two) of wine a night.  I got to the point where it was such a habit that I wasn’t even really enjoying it but rather had just come to associate coming home and relaxation with pouring a glass of wine. This is exactly why I decided it was time for a break! Since nothing great happens by chance, I knew it was time for me to do something different.Interesting because I really pay adetox - your life does not get better by chance it gets better by changeattention to being mindful and creating my life and being willing to look at what is “coming up” for healing so to speak. I had been listening to a talk recently by Marianne Williamson where she said something that really spoke to me. She was speaking about the state of the world (like who isn’t these days?) and how we got where we are.  and about how we are all using things to “numb out” or take  off “the edge.”  This is of course, the problem. Then she said, “the edge is the work”.  Wow,  how right on is that? This got me thinking and reflecting. I certainly don’t want to numb out life or sugar coat things, lol pun intended so I knew it was time for me to do a little detox of sorts.Although, here is what i did realize, I definitely noticed a little anger coming up as well as all of a sudden having sugar cravings. Fortunately, a client of mine who had stopped sugar, gluten, dairy etc the week before, came in a day or two after I had started the detox. I forgot she had purchased the new Sugar Detox Harmonized Water by Osmosis.  She reported back to me that it had really helped her with the sugar cravings.  I cracked open a bottle as soon as she left and within a day or two,  my sugar cravings had also stopped from using this am & pm.Here is what I am doing to feel and look good and to make things happen for myself:AM.

  2. Meditate /pray.  Even just a few minutes a day to set intentions and connect.
  3. Working out 20-30 minutes every single day.
  4. Reading 10-20 either am or pm.
  5. Reviewing my dreams and goals to stay motivated and on target.
  6. Listen to inspirational/motivational talks /youtube videos while getting ready.

Ending the Year on a Positivity note

throwing leaves in the air for positivityWe are heading into a brand new year, and we know that so many people are creating this year’s resolutions. Most people plan to lose weight, earn more money, quit smoking/drinking/tv and exercise more. These are all important behaviors to improve our lives. But, we want to add a new and perhaps more important thing to your list. That is, having a positive mind set.It will have grand affects on your health!It’s clear that positivity has been a concept that most people say in passing. They mention it when others are feeling ‘down’. They mention it when others are having a bad day, week, month. People use the word “positive” all the time. Well, we’re going to use it, again, but this time, we are using it to encourage and inspire great health and prosperity in health so that 2017 greets you and your body with strength and an abundance of energy.To be clear, a positive mindset is not only about the things that we say out loud. Anyone can pretend, out loud, that they are completely positive. They can use positive and affirming words, but if their mindset is still negative, their health will be affected.A positive mindset is really about how you look at a situation, time or person. A positive mindset releases, very quickly, the idea that something ‘bad’ will last forever. A positive mindset, as cheesy as this sounds, reminds you that the sun rises in the morning, and your troubles won’t last, forever. For example, if your doctor says that your knee is permanently damaged, a positive mindset can move past the doctor’s words and state that your knee is on a path of recovery and is getting better and better every day.Now, of course, it is always easier to say something than it is to do something. So, we wanted to leave you with a few pointers of positive mindset action and keeping your body healthy for 2017.

  1. Allow negative thoughts to pass through your mind. Don’t fight having them. Fighting negative thoughts will exhaust you and have negative repercussions on your health.
  2. Create a mantra that you have written around your home and can recite to yourself when you wake up and when you go to sleep. This mantra can include ideas around your health, your body, your success, your family-anything that you want!

For example: I am whole and perfectly well. Each day, I am loved and give love to others. My thoughts and my behavior are aligned, and I can constantly getting better and better at what I love to do.Mantras are fantastic at maintaining a positive mindset and increasing great health.

  1. Find a positive mindset partner. This partner is a person who is willing to be honest and vulnerable with you, too. Together, you can voice when something is heavy on you and solution seek another way to see the situation. You will help to keep each other healthy through your minds!
  2. Search for a positive mindset podcast, YouTube speaker or personality. We live in a media based society which means that, as long as you have a cellular device or computer and the internet, you will always have access to this gurus ideas. They can guide you through meditation, if that’s your thing, or simply remind you about all of the good in the world. Either way, a positive mindset guru will serve as encouragement and insight for your own mindset and keeping yourself strong and healthy.

A positive mindset is key to your health. This year, chose to see your health as bigger than pills and doctors. This year, take your health in your own hands and create a positive mindset!

Why getting proper sleep helps keep skin looking fresh

sleepSleep is that ingredient that makes all the difference to our skin. We all know that a major component of better skin, and better health for that matter, is sleep. Current habits, such as multitasking overload, technology use and alcohol/caffeine consumption inhibit quality rest.If you are looking to freshen up, liven up and improve your skin, try to get some more shuteye in your nights. Make sure that you are able to get in some very deep sleep so that your body can do all that it wants to do to repair itself. This means getting comfortable and cozy and releasing some stress.But, why? Why do we need to sleep to keep our skin looking fresh?Well, while we sleep, our body goes into reparation mode. This means, it begins to ‘heal’ itself on a cellular level and helps to clear away things that our body doesn’t want or need. Without going into the jargon and detail. Sleeping is the one ‘thing’ that really could be the answer to all the beauty prayers.  In fact, one of Audrey Hepburn’s beauty secrets was lots of sleep!Sleeping helps in the following areas of our skin…

  1. Skin elasticity. Our skin, when young, is supple and tight. Over time, the skin will degrade and becomes less so. Sleeping helps our body to regenerate, and therefore, slow down that process keeping our skin looking supple.
  2. Our eyes.  Everyone speaks about ‘bags under the eyes’. In fact, it is almost our number one indicator that someone just hasn’t had enough rest. Sleeping helps to keep our lymph  moving which keeps our skin from creating dark circles around our eyes.
  3. Blemishes. If you are prone to blemishes or other skin conditions, sleeping will help your body replenish itself by replenishing your immunity. That is not to say that sleep will fix all of your skin problems, but it will certainly make matters worse if you don’t have enough sleep and will aid in the healing process when we are getting enough!
  4. Weight and metabolism.  When we don’t sleep well, our metabolism and digestion is not working at its optimal level and we often crave carbohydrates for energy,  which over time can mean weight gain.  When the appropriate amount will give you the right boost necessary to be active in your day, which, of course, is crucial to keeping your skin looking fresh and your metabolism working.
  5. Your overall look. Everyone knows what you haven’t had enough sleep. They comment all day, “you look tired”. Sleep helps you to look replenished and rested because all of your organs aren’t having to work so hard being depleted and over-loaded.

This is the number of ounces you personally need per day. Keep in mind this is your baseline, like what your body needs to function rate.  For every cup of caffeine or alcohol, counter balance with cup for cup of water. Knowing your baseline and factoring in how much caffeine/alcohol you typically drink will make all the difference in the world for you to actually making it happen.Tip # 4. You guessed it; get enough sleep.In 2016, we are inundated with a culture of hustling, “going as hard as we want to breathe” and never quitting. This is all valid wisdom. However, not resting and not sleeping is detrimental to our skin, especially as we “grow up”.  So, get some z’s.The most important time for rejuvenation is between 10pm and 2 am. This is when our healing hormones kick in.  Everybody is different so it is important to listen to yours to get the amount of sleep you need.  It is said that between 6 – 8 hours is typically the amount that is necessary to achieve appropriate REM sleep and allow your skin to feel rested and healthy.Tip # 5. You are what you eat!We all know the obvious things like fried /greasy food is bad for us, as is excess sugar, and alcohol, and processed foods. But sometimes we aren’t super clear on what we should eat. Eat your food as close as you can to its natural state!I always say “convenience is the enemy when it comes to food. So bring your attention to this. Whenever you are turning to a package or jar, or container of remade something or another, that’s likely not so good.  Kick up your fruits and vegetables. Once in the habit, its not so hard.I like to delegate a day a week to prepare some dishes and chop some veggies so I can grab and go on the busiest of days and feel good about what I am putting in my body.And, tip # 6. BE GENTLE.We are often hard on our skin and scrub all types of products and ointments on it without a clue what they actually do.  Consult with a skin care specialist so that you can be as gentle with your skin as you deserve.You won’t be young forever, but these are some tips to help you maintain healthy, vibrant skin for life. Taking proper care of your skin can make all the difference to your future skin, and to keep them guessing your age!

Dry, chapped, irritated skin?
